In May 2010, the Board of Supervisors amended Chapter 21, Watercraft and Water Safety, of the County Code of Laws, and they also established a County of Gloucester Administrative Policy pertaining to No Wake Zones in order to mandate a uniform procedure that will be used each and every time a request for establishment or disestablishment of a no wake zone is received from a citizen. The objective was to implement a policy that will be consistently followed by both staff and Board members so that all no wake zone requests are addressed according to the same procedures.
The policy requires that any person who desires the establishment or disestablishment of a no wake zone be directed to the Director of Engineering who will be the applicant's point of contact and who will give the applicant a copy of the policy and its attachments that are necessary for the request to be formally considered and acted on by the Board of Supervisors and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.
It is the County's policy to consider establishment of a local no wake zone by ordinance only in cases where DGIF has disapproved an application for a state approved and enforced zone.
