Household harmful waste items should be disposed of during one of the County’s two free Household Harmful Waste disposal events. The Household Harmful Waste collection is usually held on the third Saturday in April and October, the collection is usually held on the third Saturday at the Hayes Convenience Center. Other times of the year, harmful waste can be disposed of, for a fee, by Veolia North America. Contact them at 804-233-6980, Customer Service Department. They can pick up the materials from you and will provide you with documentation that your material was  properly transported and disposed of.

Residents from counties other than Gloucester County, businesses from outside Gloucester County who are working in Gloucester County (including subcontractors from outside Gloucester County even if they are working for contractors located within Gloucester County), and Gloucester County businesses disposing of waste and trash generated outside Gloucester County must take the waste and trash to the main landfill at the Middle Peninsula Landfill and Recycling Center. Contact Waste Management at 804-693-5109 for specific guidance. A disposal fee will apply.

What can be recycled at Gloucester Convenience Centers?

Paper & Cardboard

  • Cardboard box packaging (i.e., cereal boxes)

  • Corrugated cardboard (flattened)

  • Junk mail

  • Newspaper and magazines

  • Office paper and envelopes

  • Paper bags

  • Phone books

GREASY PIZZA BOXES ARE A BIG NO-NO! Paper and cardboard for recycling must be clean.

Plastic

Currently we can ONLY recycle plastic containers that meet both:

  • Must have #1 or # 2 in the recycle symbol, AND

  • Must be a bottle or jug with a neck smaller than the body. (for example: milk jugs, water bottles)

Plastic lids and caps CAN be recycled. The "neck smaller than body" requirement is because it indicates a specific grade of plastic that is used in blow molds.

Metal Cans

  • Aluminum cans

  • Empty aerosol cans that have no slosh or hiss

  • Metal food cans (e.g. tuna cans)

ALL ITEMS MUST BE CLEAN AND DRY before putting in recycling container.

Rinsed aluminum drink cans may also be deposited at one of the Giving Garden Foundation’s five Can Cottage locations:

  • Abingdon Ruritan Club on Guinea Road

  • Main Street Shopping Center

  • Gloucester Moose Family Center on Moose Drive

  • Franktronics at 3618 George Washington Memorial Hwy.

  • Mathews High School on Buckley Hall Road in Mathews

What YOU Can Do

Organize a Cleanup

Want to conduct a cleanup in Gloucester? Thank you! We can lend you supplies including bags, safety vests, grabbers, caution yard signs, and buckets. Cleanup Kits are available for one week. (Renewals may be granted on a case by case basis.)

Please fill out this easy online form to request supplies: Group Cleanup Registration

You will receive an email when supplies are ready for pickup.

In-office pickup is from the lobby of the Stewart Building, 6382 Main Street,  (across from Botetourt Elementary School) during regular County office hours 8am - 4:30pm. You may return used equipment and laundry to the same location within one week. All items MUST be returned EXCEPT garbage bags. For after hours pickup, we will leave your supplies near/or in the tiny shed for you to pick up behind the Stewart Building.

Alternately, you can contact the Clean Community Coordinator or call 804-693-5370 and we will be glad to fill the online form out for you.

We ask that, after every cleanup, you complete and turn in a reporting form (you will find one with your supplies) so that the Clean Community Coordinator, a grant-supported position, can continue to provide this service to the Gloucester community.

JOIN THE CLEAN TEAM!

This enthusiastic group of solo and family volunteers regularly picks up roadside litter. Members can pick up extra cleanup supplies anytime, contact-free, from our building's backyard shed. To join, you can register using the button below or you can call or email the Clean Community Coordinator 804-693-5370.

For court-mandated community service, ask your probation officer to call Parks, Recreation & Tourism at 804-693-2107 for verification. We do not provide community service work to minors. After speaking to your P.O., we will get in touch with you to discuss scheduling. Be aware that nearly all of our community service work takes place outdoors so you must dress accordingly and provide your own drinks, snacks, work gloves, and sunscreen. The work could be weeding, picking up litter, emptying trash cans, and using tools such as string trimmers, bow saws, shovels, rakes, and pressure washers.

Volunteer on the Clean and Green Committee

This board serves in an advisory capacity to the Board of Supervisors and Clean Community staff on matters related to litter prevention, solid waste management, recycling, and beautification. Meetings are comprised of the Clean Community Coordinator, a Board of Supervisors representative, and voting members approved by the Gloucester Board of Supervisors.  Meetings are once every other month for approximately one hour. For information on recent and past activities of the Clean Community Committee, please refer to the meeting minutes archive at the County’s Meetings and Minutes Portal.

Bee City USA

Gloucester is officially an affiliate of Bee City USA!!

Gloucester County Clean Community sponsors the Bee City USA – Gloucester County program. The mission of Bee City USA is to galvanize communities to sustain pollinators, responsible for the reproduction of almost 90% of the world’s flowering plant species, by providing them with healthy habitat, rich in a variety of native plants, and free to nearly free of pesticides.

Why Gloucester makes a great affiliate for Bee City USA

  •  Maintaining habitat and forage for bees and other pollinators is essential to the sustainability and resilience of our local environment.

  •  Resources for bees include many flowering plants, thus enhancing the natural beauty of Gloucester.

  •  Maintaining habitats conducive to bees and other pollinators will support local farm and garden efforts by increasing pollination of fruits and  vegetables, as well as flowers.
