The Planning Department is staff to the Gloucester County Planning Commission. As required by the Code of Virginia, every locality creates a local Planning Commission to promote the orderly development of the locality and its environs. In addition, the Planning Commission prepares a Comprehensive Plan for the physical development of the County for the Board of Supervisors to adopt. The Planning Commission reviews, discusses and hears public comments on matters related to zoning and planning and makes formal recommendations to the Board of Supervisors regarding the Comprehensive Plan, Zoning Ordinance, Subdivision Ordinance, and rezonings. The Planning Commission also reviews major subdivisions for compliance with the Subdivision Ordinance.
The Gloucester County Planning Commission shall consist of one (1) representative from the Board of Supervisors who shall be a liaison, and seven (7) members appointed by the Board of Supervisors, one (1) from each magisterial district, two (2) At-Large representatives.
